Whether it’s a scarf, t-shirt or your favourite sports team’s kit, CSP reps and members are being encouraged to put on an item of red clothing for this year’s ‘Wear Red Day’.
This year is the 10th anniversary of the initiative, organised by Show Racism the Red Card, an anti-racism educational charity that works to challenge racism through empowering role models within communities, organisations and sports in order to dismantle racism in society.
Wear Red Day is a day to send out a strong message that racism is unacceptable and take a stand against racism in all forms. Following the racist riots in the summer this is particularly important. Last year over 615,000 people registered to take part and it’s hoped that figure will exceed one million this year.
So, if you have something red at home and would like to show your support, please wear it on Friday 18 October and encourage others to also take part. You can also find out how you could donate to the charity. Monies raised will help fund anti-racism education for young people and adults across the UK.
Throughout Friday people will be posting pictures on social media with the hashtag #WRD2024.
George Gaze, a steward at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said, 'I’ll be wearing something red to raise awareness of the ongoing need to challenge racism in all aspects of life.'
Sandra Akhihiero, steward at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust will be participating to 'not only show support for Show Racism the Red Card but also to visibility demonstrate my opposition to racism and to show solidarity to those who have experienced racism.
'I will be taking this opportunity to highlight inequality, injustice and racism in our society.'
